Old Lisbon Tram #28 has long been the hallmark of the city. Almost every tourist who visits Lisbon wants to ride it, and that is why there are always queues and in the high season you can stand for several hours waiting for your turn.   Trams in Lisbon appeared in 1873 and they looked different. These were horse-drawn wagons. They delighted the locals. These trams came to Portugal from America and the inhabitants called them "carro americano".
And in 1901, the first electric cars appeared. And then the tram routes began to expand rapidly. Later, buses and the metro would join the city transport, and some tram tracks were removed as unnecessary, except for those in the historical center. The thing is that in some old areas the streets are so narrow and winding that the bus simply cannot pass there. And while riding in a tram through one-way streets, you can even touch the walls of houses.

In total, there are 5 tram routes in Lisbon now. Old Lisbon Tram #28 passes all the main sights of the historical center. Its length is 7.02 km. The trip will take about 40-50 minutes. This is a great opportunity to get to know the city. The route starts from Piazza Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique. You will pass such interesting areas and sights as Alfama Quarter, Santa Engrácia Church, St. George Castle, Lisbon Cathedral, Baixa district, Commerce Square, Santa Justa Lift, Chiado quarter, Basílica da Estrela.
Advice before travel:
  1. Since there are usually a lot of people on this route, we recommend starting the trip before 10 a.m. It will help to keep your time.
  2. It is very important to keep an eye on your personal things, as pickpockets often operate here due to a large crowd of people.
  3. If you are standing on the tram, hold on to the handrail well, as the route is very winding and the tram can brake sharply.
  4. This is an ordinary city tram, so there will be no excursion information, we recommend you to learn it in advance.
  5. If you bought the transport card in advance, the ride is free for you. Otherwise, one trip will cost you 1.50 €.
