Bern's Clock Tower, built in 1191 as the western gate to the then-smaller city, is as old as Bern itself. The steep copper spire of the tower dominates the central city; its astronomical clock workings were added around the time of the Reformation in 1530. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, this was the official clock in Bern; all clocks were set to it. Visitors gather in front of the clock five minutes before each hour to watch its nearly 500-year-old workings.
